Hit the Trails The breathtaking Forest Preserves of Cook County offer outdoor enthusiasts over 70,000-acres and more than 100 miles of paved paths and 200 miles of natural surface trails. Hike, bike, or horseback ride through scenic woodlands, wetlands, and prairies, full of bird and animal life. North Branch Trail System The paved and natural surface North Branch Trail System runs for 20 miles along the North Branch of the Chicago River. Hike through beautifully preserved ecological areas and wildlife habitats from Glencoe to Chicago. Des Plaines River Trail and Greenway Go hiking, biking, or horseback riding down the natural surface Des Plaines Trail that runs for 28.4 miles along the Des Plaines River from Russell Road in Wadsworth to Lake Cook Road. The trail cuts through six forest preserves and gives you access to many exciting activities. The Busse Forest Trails The Busse Forest Trails in the 3,558-acre Ned Brown Preserve is a wide paved loop around the Busse Reservoir. The 12.9-mile trail winds through ancient upland forests with shorter trails branching off the main loop. 2. Go Fishing and Paddling In the Forest Preserves of Cook County, there are more than 40 ponds and lakes where you can paddle and reel in various fish species. Anglers regularly hook largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, channel catfish, bluegill, black and white crappie, and rainbow trout in these waters. Busse Reservoir The 457-acre Busse Reservoir is the largest lake in the area, with over 20 miles of shoreline. The reservoir has six fishing walls, and the Boating Center has bait and fishing supplies and offers boat rentals. Skokie Lagoons The 894-acre Skokie Lagoons is ideal for fishing, paddling, and boating. The channels of the Skokie River connect seven lagoons. There are boat launches, and you can rent a canoe or a kayak. Maple Lake The 60-acre Maple Lake near Willow Springs is an excellent place for fishing and paddling. The lake has a fishing pier, bump-outs, and Boating Center that has fishing supplies and offers boat rentals. 3. Camp in the Forests Enjoy the whole nature experience and camp out in one of the five campgrounds in The Forest Preserves of Cook County. Pitch your tent or park your RV at a scenic site, or if you prefer more creature comforts, sleep in one of the cozy cabins. Camp Bullfrog Lake Drive out to the vast, hilly Palos Preserves in Willow Springs and pitch your tent year-round on the banks of the lake at Camp Bullfrog Lake. The campground has showers, a store, and boat rentals. Camp Dan Beard Spend a few days in a rustic cabin nestled between the trees in the forest. The cabins have bathrooms and heat and air conditioning. Relax on the porch, listen to nature's sounds, and get cozy around the campfire at night.
