Porsche Macan EV

When Porsche pivoted the Macan from gasoline to electric, it was headline-grabbing—and some might say audacious.

The Macan wasn’t just any model; it was Porsche’s best-seller, the emotional favorite of many enthusiasts. So when the version with an internal-combustion engine (ICE) disappeared from its lineup, it felt like a betrayal to the past.

Now, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has shed light on what’s next—and it turns out that combustion isn’t going anywhere.

In a recent investor call about the first half of 2025, Blume was direct: Porsche isn’t phasing out ICE permanently—it’s simply expanding.

He confirmed that the company is actively developing a compact SUV that will feature both ICE and hybrid variants, slated to be in showrooms “no later than 2028.” It’s part of a broader strategy to maintain a balanced drivetrain portfolio, ensuring flexibility in markets where EV adoption isn’t universal, while still reinforcing Porsche’s long-term growth and relevance.

The new model, according to Blume, will deliver what Porsche does best—but with more choice: “a very, very typical Porsche for this segment” and deliberately distinct from the fully electric Macan. It’s positioned to complement the Macan EV, not compete with it.
The implication is clear: if you want a traditional engine—and that Porsche engine experience—hold steady. It’s not gone; it’s evolving.

Why return to fuel? The U.S. market, in particular, still values ICE for its ease, range, and tradition. But it’s not ICE alone—they’re hedging with hybrid powertrains too, signaling awareness that future flexibility matters. This approach allows Porsche to serve purists and pioneers alike. Blume didn’t confirm whether the upcoming model will carry the Macan name or adopt a new identity—but he emphasized that it will live alongside, not replace, the Macan EV.

At Lincolnwood Porsche, this is important.

Enthusiasts who want that familiar engine hum, those who find assurance in a six-figure-performance SUV powered by pistons—and a growing customer base that wants efficient hybrids—all will still have options. Right now, Lincolnwood Porsche offers the cutting-edge Macan EV. But by 2028, a new, combustion-powered compact Porsche will likely be on the lot, giving customers twice the choice for their money.

If you’ve followed Porsche, you’ve seen the shift. The Macan EV launched on a bold electric-only platform, the PPE (Premium Platform Electric), with 800‑volt architecture. It offers up to 300 kW (408 PS) and rapid DC fast charging—from 10 to 80% in just 21 minutes—proof that Porsche is serious about range and speed.

That model offers the future. Now, the company is saying, “The diverse future includes yesterday’s tech too.”

Porsche has also made clear that even their larger models—the Cayenne and Panamera—will continue offering combustion and hybrid variants for the foreseeable future. It’s not a hasty pivot; it’s careful portfolio planning.

When you buy a Porsche at our dealership, you’re buying heritage, technology, craftsmanship—and choice. Whether that’s waking up tomorrow with a Panamera hybrid lined up in your garage, or still feeling that visceral connection when your ICE-powered compact arrives in 2028—it will still be there.

Think of it this way: yes, Porsche is electric-forward.

But if society isn’t fully electric yet, Porsche isn’t there either—and Blume confirmed it. Their roadmap still includes engine noise, tailpipe presence, and that unmistakable acceleration feeling. It’s just wrapped in a broader, smarter plan.
