4 Fun Winter Activities in Driving Distance of Lincolnwood, IL

When winter hits Lincolnwood, IL, load your gear in a spacious Porsche Cayenne and head outdoors to play. There are countless exciting winter activities, from outdoor skating, sledding, and snowshoeing to skiing, snowboarding, and tubing.

1. Ice Skating

Dust off your skates and head to Henry A. Proesel Park on Lincoln Avenue in Lincolnwood, when the volleyball court at the shelter turns into a skating rink. The skating is free but not monitored, so please be careful. Drive 14.2 miles to 201 East Randolph Street in Chicago to glide over the ice on the iconic Millenium Park ice rink and enjoy spectacular views of bustling Michigan Avenue and the downtown skyline.

Another fantastic skating spot is the Skating Ribbon, which winds past snow-covered pine trees through the scenic Maggie Daley Park at 337 East Randolph Street. The Chicago rinks are open from November to the end of February, weather permitting, and rental skates are available.

2. Sledding

Pack the kids, the sled, and Fido in the car and head a short 3.7 miles down the road to Caldwell Woods at 6200 West Devon Avenue in Chicago for some exciting slipping and sliding. The sledding hill is close to the entrance and has reasonably sized slopes. If you want to sled at night, the hill is lighted and staffed when the conditions are right.

For a more exhilarating sledding experience, head to the 257-acre Dan Ryan Woods at South Western Avenue and West 87th Street in Chicago, 26.2 miles from Lincolnwood, to slide down the 200-foot hill, one of the largest in the city. The hill is lit and staffed from Sunday to Thursday between 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Friday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

3. Snowshoeing and Polar Adventure Days

The ideal place to trek through the snow is at the beautiful 119-acre Northerly Island at 1521 South Linn White Drive in Chicago, 14 miles from Lincolnwood. Snowshoe on the winding trails along the Lake Michigan shoreline and catch glimpses of winter birds and the impressive Chicago skyline.

Join the park’s free Polar Adventure Days on Saturdays in January and February from noon to 3 p.m. to watch Husky teams sled around the park, make nature-inspired winter crafts, and get cozy around bonfires with steaming cups of cocoa.

4. Downhill Skiing, Snowboarding, and Tubing

Villa Olivia at 1401 West Lake Street in Bartlett is one of Illinois’s most popular winter sports areas and well worth the 32-mile drive for a weekend on the slopes. There is a range of winter sports activities, including skiing, snowboarding, and tubing.
